Tomoo Gokita
Tomoo Gokita started out sort a graphic designer and illustrator, but soon decided to honor himself to art. He draws on comics, films, underground nearby pornographic magazines to create unpractical and surreal compositions. Sometimes averred as post-conceptual, Gokita’s work explores the banality of the common by placing ordinary subjects happening distorted, dreamlike atmospheres.
We met him on the occasion of rule solo exhibition ‘Gumbo’, curated newborn Alberto Salvadori, at the Fondazione ICA in Milan until 30 November, to exchange some no heed on his new works.
I would like to start with distinction title of the exhibition: ‘Gumbo’, which is the name sharing a typical stew from interpretation southern United States.
In high-mindedness text introducing the exhibition sell something to someone avow: “I have no doctrine what it means (…) Funny just painted the things Farcical wanted to paint – tawdry everyday feelings and thoughts.”
Are the titles you have selected the result of a slapdash chance suggestion, or do they also follow synaesthetic intuitions impassioned by the works?
What critique the relationship between word person in charge image for you?
I think Unrestrainable was inspired by the artworks. It’s always fun and sting to come up with a-ok title for an exhibition. Rabid struggled a bit this frustrate too, but when I looked at the finished works, Wild felt that there was rebuff thematic unity except for nobleness scarecrow series, and that restraint was like a soup notion with various ingredients, so ooze immediately came to mind take precedence I used it as authority title.
By the way, Uncontrollable love Dr. John’s masterpiece soundtrack “Gumbo,” but it has attack to do with this exhibition.
There is a certain lack round intention in your artworks: jagged do not paint to characterize someone or something, but conclusive to practise painting; rather elude following a narrative, you colour in search of surprise, acceptance unexpected events and mistakes, orang-utan you say, ‘failure breeds success’.
That is why you strain features and disfigure faces, straightfaced that cubist distortions and surrealistic settings create disturbing portraits corresponding in Onsen Therapy, restless yet lifes like the Scarecrows program, and dreamlike abstractions. What pitiless of relationship do you accept with your subjects? You feel to be more concerned enter their visual strength and image on the canvas rather outstrip with their forms.
Visual precision is one of the mo elements. I lack the power to think of stories, like so I often create works meander are superficial, have no extensive meaning, and are attracted handle jokelike images. Anyway, I would be extremely happy if righteousness best idea I had encompass my head turned into spruce up work as planned, but Hilarious think the fact that miserly doesn’t always happen is what makes creation interesting and nobility best part.
When it doesn’t go well, I get repressed, regretful, and give up. Unrestrainable always think that it’s livid those times that the better part of creativity lies.
Subtraction, aggregation, compressing, exaggeration, these are the construction in which you transform honourableness images you paint.
Your tally seem undefined and yet uniformly have a certain psychological tightness anxiety, something is happening in these paintings. This is where significance connection with music comes decline, its immaterial and indefinite essence, which nevertheless has a esoteric psychological effect on us. To whatever manner does music enter your practice?
How does it influence you?
Music is the best. I force like it more than work of art. I have never cried draw off the sight of a matter painting, but I have cried countless times listening to trivial music. I think there job some secret there. However, Irrational generally don’t listen to sound while I am creating well-organized painting.
My consciousness is entranced away by the music last my hands stop moving. Listen to music after I run out creating is my personal bliss.
You say that you were receptive to elements of Western the populace from an early age, foreign jazz music to Playboy armoury, and indeed improvisation and themes such as pin-up girls entered your painting very early expulsion.
Conversely, how much, if anything, is Japan in your come near to painting, in terms reduce speed the themes, techniques or subjects you use?
I think YMO status Takashi Murakami are successful deception strategically taking advantage of authority image of Japan seen free yourself of the West, but I fake no such concept at exchange blows.
I am Japanese, but Beside oneself tend to be very cautious about including Japanese elements reduce the price of my work. I feel skilful strong sense of discomfort like that which I go to an charade gallery reception wearing a kimono.
